Classical Sanskrit text on medicine Susrut Samhita talking about anatomical science ahead of Hippocrates, Baudhayan first describing Pythagoras theorem some 300 years ahead of the Greek mathematician, value of Pi first written about in Ganita Kaumudi and Vedic aviation technology tested much before Wright brothers — the most sought-after Indian Science Congress session ‘Vedic Science through Sanskrit’ on Sunday had it all to keep audience glued to their seats for over five hours.
Among the 500-odd people who attended the event at the University of Mumbai, there were many scientists who came out of curiosity searching for evidence for the claims made by the speakers. Many saints in saffron and white were also present among the audience.
The focus was on Captain Anand J Bodas, who has courted lot of controversy over claims of aeroplanes being discovered in Vedic times. Undeterred by all the negative attention he got, Bodas said history has “only noted” Wright brothers flying the first aircraft in 1903 but there is reference of India’s aviation technology in the Rig Veda which has not become part of official history.
Bodas said India also excelled in the field of construction of fighter aircraft, radars, alloys for making aircraft and flying manual for pilots. The retired principal of a pilot training institute said aeronautics is described in Sanskrit in 100 sections, eight chapters, 500 principles and 3,000 slokas. “Great sage Bharadwaja explained the construction of aircraft and the way to fly it in air, land, water and use the same aircraft like a submarine. He also described the existence of aeroplanes which travel from one country to another, one continent to another and one planet to another,” Bodas said adding he also explained the construction of warplanes and fighter aircraft.
Urging students to study ancient aviation technology, Bodas said the Vaimaanikashastra deals with aeronautics, including the design of aircraft, the way they can be used for transportation and other applications in detail.
“Vaimaanikashastra also talks about the various types of metal alloys used to build an aeroplane. Now we import aeroplane alloys. The younger generation should study the alloys mentioned in the book and make them here,” Bodas said, adding Vedic science also mentioned the flexible exhaust system for aircraft.
An exhibition showcasing books in Sanskrit describing India’s contribution to medical, chemical, physical, surgical and atmospheric sciences was put up at the entrance of the venue for the lecture. Replicas of ancient surgical instruments, tools to measure humidity and other items were also on display.
